A Moroccan bath is one of the most popular bookings in Dubai spa menus, and one of the least well-explained. Most first-timers walk in expecting a bubble bath and walk out either delighted or bewildered. This guide tells you exactly what to expect — the steps, the ingredients, the bare facts about modesty, the price you should pay, and how it differs from a Turkish hammam.
Origin: hammam culture, 1,300 years deep
The hammam tradition spread across North Africa and the Levant from the 7th century onwards, and the Moroccan version evolved its own ritual around black soap (savon beldi) and the kessa exfoliating glove. In Morocco, it’s a social weekly ritual — neighbours meet at the public hammam, swap gossip, and scrub each other’s backs. The Dubai spa version is the private, hospitality-grade adaptation: same ingredients, same steps, very different ambience.
The five steps — what actually happens
- Steam (10–15 min) — you lie or sit on a heated marble slab in a steam room until your pores open. Skin softens visibly
- Black soap application — the therapist applies savon beldi (olive-based black soap with eucalyptus) and leaves it for 5–10 minutes
- Kessa scrub — the actual scrub. A coarse kessa glove removes dead skin in dramatic visible quantities. This is the famous “see your old skin roll off” moment
- Ghassoul clay mask — Moroccan volcanic clay applied head-to-toe, drawn from Atlas Mountain quarries. Detoxifies and softens
- Argan oil massage finish — a light oil application to seal the freshly resurfaced skin
Full appointment is 60–75 minutes. Some Dubai spas add 30 minutes of optional full-body massage at the end — worth it if you have time and budget.

Genuinely real
- Visible removal of dead skin — skin texture noticeably smoother for 2–3 weeks
- Improved circulation from the scrubbing — flush you can see in the mirror after
- Better product absorption afterwards — moisturizers actually penetrate post-scrub
- Stress relief — the heat + ritual is a measurable parasympathetic activator
Overblown claims
- “Detoxifies the body” — your liver and kidneys do that. The bath cleans skin
- “Cures eczema” — it doesn’t. If you have active eczema, skip the scrub or speak to your dermatologist first
- “Tightens skin” — short-term plumping yes, long-term tightening no
What to wear (and what not to)
This is the question most first-timers are too shy to ask. The answer in Dubai is simple: a disposable bottom is provided. You wear it. The therapist wears one too. The top is your choice — most clients go topless because the kessa needs unobstructed access to the back, but you can keep a bandeau on. All Dubai spas are gender-separated for Moroccan bath services unless the spa is at a hotel with a private couples’ suite.

Once a month is the sweet spot for most skin types. The kessa is aggressive — going every two weeks can compromise the skin barrier and cause sensitivity. Sensitive or thinner skin types: every 6–8 weeks.

The AED 80 version uses the same ingredients but in a much shorter, more functional setting — towels are basic, the steam room may be shared. The AED 450+ version is the experience: private suite, premium oils, longer ritual, herbal tea after.
How it differs from a Turkish hammam
Turkish hammams use a similar steam-soap-scrub structure but with a foam massage step instead of the ghassoul clay, and the scrub uses a softer mitt. Turkish baths are often longer and more communal. If you’ve done a Turkish hammam and liked the foam massage, you’ll find Moroccan baths more focused on exfoliation and less on the lather show.

It shouldn’t. The kessa scrub is firm but not painful. If you’re sensitive, tell the therapist to use medium pressure. Discomfort is a sign the technician is going too hard.

Best to wait until after the first trimester, and avoid the hottest steam settings. Always tell the spa you’re pregnant at booking — they’ll adjust the protocol.
