Hair extensions in Dubai are everywhere β and quality varies massively. Tape-ins from a back-of-Karama salon can damage your natural hair in three weeks. Premium bonds from a senior stylist can last six months without a single broken strand. The question “which type is best?” is the wrong question; the right question is “which type fits my hair and my lifestyle?”. This guide answers both.
The three main types
Tape-in extensions
Wefts of hair pre-bonded to a medical-grade adhesive strip. Applied in matching pairs (top + bottom) sandwiching a thin section of natural hair. Fast to apply (60β90 minutes for full head), comfortable to wear, and the gold standard for fine to medium hair types.
Bond extensions (keratin / I-tip)
Individual strands of extension hair bonded to small sections of natural hair using a keratin-based polymer (sometimes called “hot fusion”) or threaded through a micro-ring (cold fusion / I-tip). More time-intensive β 3β4 hours of application β but virtually invisible and excellent for thicker hair.
Clip-ins
Removable wefts with sewn-in clips. Apply yourself in 5 minutes, remove at night. No commitment, no salon visits, no damage to natural hair. The trade-off is they’re for occasional use only β not for daily wear.
Cost in Dubai β honest ranges
| Type | Application cost | Hair cost (Remy human) | Maintenance / 6 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tape-in (full head) | AED 800β1,400 | AED 2,500β4,500 | AED 1,200 (every 8 weeks) |
| Bond extensions (full head) | AED 1,500β2,800 | AED 4,000β7,000 | AED 1,800 (every 12 weeks) |
| Clip-ins (full set) | AED 0 | AED 1,800β4,000 | AED 0 β replace once a year |
Anyone quoting you AED 200 for a full head of tape-ins is either using synthetic hair or running a salon you shouldn’t sit in. Real Remy hair has a minimum cost β there’s no cheap way around it.
Longevity β what really lasts
- Tape-ins: hair pieces last 6β9 months with rotation. Bonds need re-taping every 7β9 weeks
- Keratin bonds: 4β6 months wear per application. Hair often re-usable once
- I-tip / micro-ring: 3β4 months wear per application. Hair very re-usable
- Clip-ins: 12β18 months with proper care, used 2β3 times per week
Who’s a good candidate?
Tape-in suits…
Fine, straight or wavy hair. Anyone who hates the feeling of bulk at the scalp. Active lifestyle (yoga, swimming, gym) β tapes hold up well to sweat if the hair is dried promptly.
Bonds suit…
Thicker hair. People who want maximum density without visible attachments. Anyone happy with a longer salon appointment and a slightly heavier feel at the scalp.
Clip-ins suit…
Anyone wanting flexibility β events, photoshoots, weddings, holidays. Not great for daily wear because the friction at the clip points causes breakage over time.
Aftercare rules
- Wash with sulphate-free shampoo β sulphates dissolve the tape adhesive
- Never sleep on wet extensions β bonds slip, tapes loosen
- Brush from ends to roots with a soft-bristle extension brush β never a regular paddle brush at the bonds
- Sleep in a loose braid or low pony β friction at night is the biggest cause of matting
- Keep direct heat (curling iron, straightener) at 180Β°C max β Remy hair is fragile
We brief every Elaris extension client with a printed aftercare card and a 14-day check-in. Read more in our balayage and hair colour guide β colouring extensions has its own rules.
Red flags when picking a salon
- No consultation before application β every reputable salon does a free consult and patch test
- Synthetic hair sold as “100% human” β burn test or ask for the certification
- Application time under 60 minutes for a full head of tape-ins β they’re being rushed
- No written aftercare instructions
- No replacement / refund policy β see our refund and rebooking policy for what a real one looks like

FAQ
How much do hair extensions cost at a good Dubai salon?
Full head of premium tape-ins: AED 3,500β5,500 including hair. Full head of bonds: AED 5,500β9,500. Clip-ins: AED 1,800β4,000 with no application fee.
Will extensions damage my natural hair?
When applied by a trained stylist with the right method for your hair, no. Damage comes from oversized sections, low-quality adhesive, or skipping aftercare.
Can I swim with hair extensions?
Yes, with a few rules. Wet hair before entering pool/sea so it absorbs less chlorine or salt. Tie in a low braid. Rinse immediately after. Avoid jumping in face-first.
How long does each type last?
Tape-ins: 6β9 months wear with re-taping every 8 weeks. Bonds: 4β6 months per application. Clip-ins: 1β1.5 years if cared for.
What’s the most invisible type?
I-tip bonds and high-quality tape-ins are both nearly invisible. Tapes are easier to hide on fine hair; bonds on thicker hair.
