Keratin vs Hair Botox vs Brazilian Blowout — Which Lasts Longest in Dubai?

If you’ve spent 20 minutes scrolling salon ads in Dubai, you’ve probably hit the same three names — keratin, hair botox, and Brazilian blowout. They all promise the same thing on the tin: glossy, frizz-free hair that survives summer. They are not the same treatment, they don’t cost the same, and they don’t behave the same in 78% humidity.

This guide is the comparison we wish existed when our clients first started asking which one to book. We’ve worked on every hair type that walks through our door in DIFC, Jumeirah, and Downtown — fine Asian hair, chemically lightened blonde, coily 4A textures, hijab-covered heads that need maximum smoothing without weight. Here’s how the three treatments actually stack up.

Quick comparison: the only table you need

Treatment Lasts (Dubai humidity) Best for Average Elaris price Formaldehyde?
Keratin (sulphate-free) 4–6 months Frizzy, wavy, medium-thick hair AED 950–1,800 Trace / none
Hair Botox 2–3 months Damaged, fine, brittle hair AED 700–1,400 None
Brazilian Blowout (original) 3–4 months Curly hair wanting bone-straight finish AED 1,200–2,200 Yes (controlled)

Keratin — the science, simplified

Keratin is the protein your hair is already made of. When a stylist applies a keratin treatment, they’re layering a keratin-based smoothing solution onto each strand, then sealing it in with controlled heat — usually a 230°C flat iron passed slowly through small sections. The heat reshapes the hydrogen bonds and locks the protein in. The result is smoother cuticles, less frizz, and 60–70% less drying time at home.

Who keratin actually suits

  • Wavy 2B–2C or loose curly 3A hair that frizzes the second you step outside
  • Anyone with chemically treated or coloured hair who wants conditioning + smoothing in one session
  • Clients in JBR, Marina or Palm whose sea-air commute murders their blowout in 90 minutes

What keratin won’t do

It won’t permanently straighten very tight curls. If you have a 3C–4C texture and you walk in asking for poker-straight hair, keratin will reduce volume and add shine — but you’ll still have curl pattern. For bone-straight on tight curls, Brazilian blowout or Japanese straightening are different conversations.

Hair Botox — what it actually is

Despite the name, hair botox has nothing to do with the injectable cosmetic. It’s a marketing label for a deep conditioning treatment built around proteins (often hydrolysed collagen or wheat protein), hyaluronic acid, B5, and amino acids. Where keratin smooths the cuticle, hair botox fills in damaged spots along the cuticle — small voids caused by bleaching, heat, or chemical relaxers.

Practically: think of keratin as a smoothing treatment with conditioning side-effects, and hair botox as a conditioning treatment with smoothing side-effects. The two are sometimes layered (we do this for clients who’ve over-bleached) but they’re not interchangeable.

Why we recommend hair botox over keratin for fine, damaged hair

  • Lower heat exposure — most hair botox protocols cap the iron at 200°C
  • Doesn’t make fine hair sit flat against the scalp the way some keratin can
  • Repair-first chemistry — visibly improves brittleness within one session

Brazilian Blowout — yes, it’s regulated

The original Brazilian Blowout system uses methylene glycol, which under heat releases formaldehyde. That’s controversial — the U.S. FDA has issued safety guidance on formaldehyde-releasing hair treatments, and the UAE follows similarly strict cosmetic safety standards via the Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology (ESMA).

Reputable Dubai salons (us included) only run Brazilian Blowout protocols in fully ventilated dedicated rooms, with the stylist masked, and only on clients who’ve been briefed on the chemistry. We will not do a Brazilian Blowout on pregnant clients or on anyone with a respiratory condition. There are excellent formaldehyde-free alternatives now, and most clients who used to ask for Brazilian Blowout end up choosing one of those instead.

When Brazilian Blowout still wins

Very tight curl patterns that want a 6–8 week bone-straight phase before transitioning back. The longevity and the absolute straightness of the original chemistry are still unmatched — but the trade-offs are real, and we always present them upfront.

The Dubai humidity factor

Dubai’s summer humidity at the coast averages 60–75%, and a single August afternoon at La Mer can push it past 90%. That moisture is what raises the cuticle of untreated hair and causes frizz. All three treatments work by sealing the cuticle, but they don’t seal it equally.

In our experience tracking client revisits across the last three summer cycles:

  • Sulphate-free keratin lasts longest on coastal residents — 5 months on average for clients in Marina, JBR, Palm
  • Hair botox fades fastest because it’s a repair treatment, not primarily a sealant — expect 8–10 weeks before frizz returns
  • Brazilian Blowout holds well but degrades fast if you swim daily in chlorinated pools without a pre-swim rinse

Pricing breakdown at Elaris

Prices vary by hair length and density. The numbers below are for medium-length, medium-density hair — your in-salon consultation will adjust up or down.

Length Keratin Hair Botox Brazilian Blowout
Short (above shoulders) AED 950 AED 700 AED 1,200
Medium (shoulder–mid-back) AED 1,300 AED 950 AED 1,650
Long (mid-back+) AED 1,800 AED 1,400 AED 2,200

All prices include a take-home sulphate-free shampoo + conditioner duo, a 24-hour follow-up call from your stylist, and a free 14-day re-iron if the treatment hasn’t set evenly. See our refund and rebooking policy for the full terms.

Aftercare — the rules differ

Keratin (the 14-day rule)

  • No washing, tying up, tucking behind ears, or clipping for 14 days — yes, really
  • Sleep on silk for the first two weeks
  • Sulphate-free, sodium-chloride-free shampoo from day 15 onwards

Hair botox

Much more forgiving. You can wash after 48 hours, tie hair up the same day, and use most shampoos. Just avoid heavy clarifying shampoos for the first month — they’ll strip the repair proteins faster.

Brazilian Blowout

Effectively zero downtime. You can wash, swim, and style the same day. The trade-off was the chemistry, not the routine.

Decision tree: which one should you book?

If you have to pick in 30 seconds:

  1. Frizz-prone wavy/curly hair, no major damage → keratin
  2. Over-processed blonde or visibly damaged hair → hair botox (and maybe keratin three months later)
  3. Tight 4A–4C curls, want a temporary bone-straight phase → Brazilian Blowout with full briefing
  4. Pregnant, breastfeeding, asthmatic → hair botox is the only one we’ll do

FAQ

Which lasts longer in Dubai — keratin or Brazilian blowout?

Sulphate-free keratin typically outlasts Brazilian Blowout in Dubai humidity. We see 5 months on average for keratin vs 3–4 months for Brazilian Blowout, mostly because of pool chlorine exposure that affects coastal residents.

Can I do hair botox if I’m pregnant?

Yes. Hair botox is formaldehyde-free and uses food-grade proteins and amino acids. It’s the smoothing treatment we recommend for pregnant and breastfeeding clients.

How much does a keratin treatment cost at Elaris?

AED 950 for short hair, AED 1,300 for shoulder to mid-back, AED 1,800 for longer hair. Prices include sulphate-free aftercare products and a follow-up call.

Will keratin damage my coloured hair?

Sulphate-free keratin is safe on coloured hair and often improves the colour by sealing the cuticle. We do it the same day as a colour service in many cases.

Is Brazilian Blowout banned in the UAE?

No. Formaldehyde-releasing treatments are regulated, not banned. They must be applied in ventilated salons with proper protocols. Most salons (including Elaris) prefer formaldehyde-free alternatives unless the client specifically requests the original system.
